Youthful Chess Star, Reds Play
Moscow (UPI) — Youthful American chess wizard Bobby Fischer has been here only one day but already managed to play several games with Russians.
They weren't full length matches but simply what is called “rapid transit” chess—five minute games played in quick succession.
Fischer flew in Wednesday from Prague for a two-week visit at the invitation of the Soviet Sports Committee.
The newspaper Evening Moscow reported the arrival of the “talented” young player on the front page of Thursday's edition. His itinerary here was being worked out.
Wednesday afternoon, Fischer strolled through Gorky Park, one of Moscow's largest, for recreation and relaxation.
He naturally saw the outdoor chess arena, where enthusiasts from six to 60 spend many free summer hours.
The American teen-ager was accompanied by his 20-year-old sister, Joan, who teasingly said she came along “to keep Bobby away from the Vodka.”
While Bobby plays chess, she plans to do some sight-seeing, take photos and visit the ballet theater.
Thursday evening both the Fischers were going to the circus.
