Young Player Given Advice on Stardom
A letter from Collingswood to this desk reads as follows:
“I am an avid reader of your column on chess in The Courier-Post. I notice that you have devoted much space to 14-year-old Bobby Fischer, who has just recently won the U.S. National Championship.
“I will be 14 in June and I play chess whenever I can. I belong to the chess club in school and so far I am undefeated. Could you please write and tell me how it would be possible for me to enter tournaments and get a chance to rise in fame like Bobby Fischer?
“I am very interested in chess and I would appreciate and honor your reply.”
Our first suggestion to this reader is that he join one of the chess clubs in this area. These include the Camden City Chess Club, which meets on Friday nights at the Camden Police and Firemen's Club, 1175 Whitman ave., and the Franklin-Mercantile Chess Club, 1616 Locust st., Philadelphia, among others.
All chess clubs are only too eager to welcome new players and especially young and ambitious players like the writer of this letter. Most great players reach stardom in their teens. It is quite possible that a number of Bobby Fischers exist in the United States, needing only to be discovered and to engage in first-flight competition.
