Time Stands Still — almost — when it comes to chess. Enthusiasts of the game in Britain are alerted by the news that the famous annual international Christmas Chess Congress at the English seaside town of Hastings will this year have as chief player the world chess champion, Mr. Botvinnik of Russia, with perhaps the young American prodigy, Bobby Fischer, as his most formidable competitor.
A hundred or more chess clocks will be ticking amid the silence of the tournament tables, but this will be nothing to the barrage of tickings at the clock and watch exhibition.
Chess: Eight Nations at Hastings
Eight nations will be represented in the Premier tournament of the Hastings International Christmas chess congress, which opens on December 29. Players in the Premier section announced last night at Hastings are: L. Barden, P. Clarke (both United Kingdom), R. G. Wade (New Zealand), M. Radoicic (Jugoslavia), F. Olafsson (Iceland), K. Darga (West Germany), W. Uhlmann (East Germany), L. Portisch (Hungary) and A. Duckstein (Austria).
It is hoped that R. Fischer, of the Manhattan Chess Club, New York, known as the American boy chess wonder, will compete, but the final name has not been announced. Fischer is only 15.
