Soviet Looms As Champion In Chess Play
Portoroz, Yugoslavia (AP)—Soviet champion Mikhail Talj appeared the apparent winner of the interzonal chess tournament Saturday after the completion of the 19th round.
Talj, who did not play Saturday, led the competition with 12.5 points.
The closest American, 15-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, N. Y., drew with Czechoslovakian grand master Miroslav Filip Saturday. Their kings Indian defense game ended after 17 moves. Fischer succeeded in balancing the game and surprised onlookers by not trying to defeat the Czech.
Fischer must win both his remaining matches to finish in the top six.
James Sherwin, U.S. international master, lost his match to Argentinean Oscar Panno after 45 moves.
Besides Talj, others given strong chances to finish in the top six are Russia's Tigran Petrosjan, Yugoslavia's Svetozar Gligoric, Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland and Paul Benko, a Hungarian refugee, now a member of the U.S. chess federation.
Benko Saturday defeated Philippine international master Rodolfo Cardoso after 40 moves in their Sicilian game.
