The World of Chess - The Current Issue of a weekly news magazine on International Grandmaster Robert Fischer, just turned 15.
In the main it is accurate but emphasis is misplaced. “The Federation International des Echecs made a special gesture of naming him International Master, says the story.
As a matter of fact they made him an International Grandmaster and not as a special gesture, but because they could do no other, for Fischer won both the U.S. title and the U.S. Open Championship within a few months.
The article continued that Fischer complained, “They should have made me a Grandmaster.”
Exactly so! But the Federation lacked the courage, giving as an excuse that he had not engaged in major international tournaments.
Where Fischer's extreme youth caught favorable attention at the start of his fabulous tournament career, it is now an impediment to full recognition. The record and score are there to see.
