Fischer Has Lead In Chess Tourney
Youthful Champion Agrees to Draw—Evans Second With Score of 4-1 by Hermann Helms ©New York Times News Service
New York—Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, 15-year-old United States chess champion, and Donald Byrne of Valparaiso, Ind., agreed to a draw after 48 moves in the seventh round of the annual U.S. championship Saturday.
Fischer conducted the black-pieces, and although he was on the defensive in the opening, he soon took the aggressive, sacrificed the exchange and, from then on, set the pace.
They agreed to the draw when preparations had been made to adjourn after a five-hour session. Fischer then led the field of 12 with a score of 4½-1½. He still had an unfinished game from the fourth round. He will meet Larry Evans, second with 4-1, in the eighth round.
Evans, former U.S. champion, defeated Raymond Weinstein in 38 moves in Friday's session. The game between Evans and Samuel Reshevsky was postponed.
