Brooklyn Boy, Age 14, Wins U.S. Chess Title
New York — (JTA) — Fourteen-year-old Robert Fischer of Brooklyn became the United States chess champion, winning the title in a tournament in which 13 American chess masters participated.
The competition included Samuel Reshevsky, the one-time boy wonder who came from Poland nearly 40 years ago to dazzle the American chess world with a skill that baffled some of the greatest players of the time.
Young Fischer, already rated the chess prodigy of this generation, plans to bid for the world title at the September tournament in Yugoslavia if funds can be raised. He was unable to take part in a tournament last summer in Russia for lack of expense money.
