Fischer Improves Lead In U.S. Chess
15-Year-Old Defender Beats Weinstein in 58 Moves—Reshevsky Plays Draw
Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, the 15-year-old defender, increased his lead last night in the United States chess championship for the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy.
Fischer won his adjourned fourth-round game with Raymond Weinstein of Brooklyn College in fifty-eight moves at the Manhattan Chess club. With eight rounds completed, Fischer had a score of 6—2 and was undefeated.
Tied for second place were Larry Evans and Samuel Reshevsky, both former champions. Evans drew his fifth-round game with Charles Kalme of Philadelphia in forty-five moves: Reshevsky drew with Edmar Mednis of New York University in fifth-seven moves in a postponed second-round game.
In the completion of other adjourned games Paul Benko drew with Donald Byrne in forty-six moves and William Lombardy beat Raymond Weinstein in forty moves.
Ten master players representing eight countries began play yesterday in the annual international tournament sponsored by the Hastings and St. Leonards Chess Club of Hastings, England, according to a report from London.
