Interzonal Tournament
Twenty-one players took part in the interzonal tournament recently concluded at Portoroz, Yugoslavia, as a result of which the top six qualified for the 1959 Candidate Tournament, the winner of which will play a 24-game match with World Champion Botvinnik of Russia. The six leading scorers were Tal, Russia, 13½-6½; Gligoric, Yugoslavia, 13-7; Benko, Hungary, 12½-7½; Petrosian, Russia, 12½-7½; Fischer, U.S.A. 12-8; Olafsson, Iceland, 12-8. Some of those having lower scores were Bronstein, Auerbach, Matanovic, Pachmann, Szabo, Panno, Larsen. The other United States entry was James Sherwin, who finished 17th, with score 7½-12½
