Hastings Chess Tournament
Dr. Fazekas, current British champion, is not on the roster. Whether he received no invitation or whether he declined out of protest against his shabby treatment by the British Chess Federation selection committee which denied him a place on the English team in the recent Olympics at Munich, we cannot say. Criticism of the committee's action by the British chess players has precipitated a crisis in the BCF.
CRITICS ALLEGE that Dr. Fazekas was snubbed because he is a naturalized citizen. Rumors, even facts, that come to our attention of any political in-fighting during the great Hastings Chess Congress will, of course, be retailed to SUN-TELE chess fans.
American Champion, Grand Master Robert Fischer and World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik declined invitations — Fischer because he cannot forsake his high school classes, and Botvinnik because he had no more worlds to conquer.
