Fischer's Fine Chess - Portoroz Tournament
The interzonal chess tournament entered its final round at Portoroz with Tal, the Russian champion, still in the lead and Petrosian (U.S.S.R.) and Gligoric (Yugoslavia) also certain of a place in next year's candidates tournament for the world title.
In the twentieth round the 15-year-old American prodigy, Fischer, beat Cardoso in a brilliant ending. Before the tournament started his chances of finishing among the first six were regarded as pretty unlikely, but after a nervous start he has steadily improved until now, with Benko who has also improved out of all recognition he stands a good chance.
