The annual scramble for the title of U.S. Open Chess Champion is taking place Aug. 4-16 in Rochester, Minn. The event is being sponsored by the United States Chess Federation and International Business Machiens. The playing site is IBM's spacious cafeteria where a free luncheon will be provided for all participants on the final day.
A prize fund of $3,250 and ten trophies should attract the nation's top chess talent.
Bobby Fischer, present champion, is bowling them over in Europe and will not defend his title.
