Petrosian Leads, 6-2, In Interzonal Chess
Tigran Petrosian of Russia is alone in the lead with a score of 6-2 after eight rounds of the Interzonal Chess Tournament at Portoroz, Yugoslavia, according to a report from the New York Times. He has won four and drawn four without a loss.
Paul Benko, who is representing Hungary, through now a resident of the U.S. moved up to second with 5½-1½ after completing two adjourned games. He drew with David Bronstein of Russia in a game that lasted three sessions. Benko had a bye, and has thus played one game less than the leader.
Third place is held by Fridrik Olafsson of Iceland, with a 5½-2½ score. He was beaten by Otto Neikirch of Bulgaria, but has four wins, with Laszlo Szabo of Hungary and Svetozar Gligoric of Yugoslavia among his victims.
Bobby Fischer, 15-year-old U.S. champion, improved his standing with a good victory over Bent Larsen of Denmark. Fischer has 4-3, including draws with two of the top Russian representatives, David Bronstein and Yuri Auerbach.
James T. Sherwin of New York has found the going much heavier. He has 1½-5½, scoring but one draw against Dr. Miroslav Filip of Czechoslovakia in this week's play. Sherwin lost to Ludek Pachman of Czechoslovakia, Alexander Matanovic of Yugoslavia and Rodolfo Cardoso of the Philippine Islands.
